Cost of living in Batumi, Georgia

In the article 5 reasons why Batumi is better than Moscow (or other big city) I specified the low cost of living as the first reason why I moved from Moscow to Batumi. So let’s have a closer look at this topic. Apartment. The middle price of apartments for 1-2 person (about 50 sq. m., studio with separate bedroom) is about 300$. That would be a flat not far from the city center (honestly the city is so small as most living areas would be in 15 minutes from the center), with good design, fully...

This is a guest post by Mrs. Irina Nikolaeva a Russian born expat now living in Georgia's Batumi. As I have received a lot of questions lately on expat advice, I asked Irina to come up with expat advice series on my blog, see her previous articles: About New Year's Holidays in Georgia and 5 reasons why Batumi is better than Moscow (or other big city). Also, if you are interested to relocate to Georgia, see following articles: Can You Buy a Good Life in Tbilisi With $500...

UAE Resident: Why Migrate to Georgia

This is a guest post by Mrs. Fatima Ali, reader of this blog, who contacted me about possible migration from UAE to Georgia. As lately I've been receiving several such questions and mostly from UAE, after giving some basic advice, I asked Fatima Ali, could she come up with a short article in a free flow on topic - Why Georgia? See: Can You Buy a Good Life in Tbilisi With $500 as a Foreign Expat? With the permission of Mrs. Fatima Ali and little re-editing I publish her honest...

5 reasons why Batumi is better than Moscow (or other big city)

Last 10 years I was living in big cities. That time I moved from a small town in Belarus thinking that I need to live in the city with more people and more opportunities. I started from St. Petersburg. After 5 years in the cultural capital of Russia I decided that 5 million people is not enough for me and moved to Moscow. But last year everything changed. #mc_embed_signup{background:#fff; clear:left; font:14px Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; width:100%;} /* Add your own MailChimp...

About New Year's Holidays in Georgia

Do you have plans for the 2018 New Year's holidays? Good time to think about coming to Georgia. Georgian holidays are beginning after December 25. The first thing that surprises most of the first time visitors is a bottle of wine which is handed from the border guard once your passport is stamped and you are approved for entry to Georgia. The bottle of wine is is the present from the Georgian government, to show how Georgia loves their tourists.  On the other hand...

Can You Buy a Good Life in Tbilisi With $500 as a Foreign Expat?

A time ago I did an experiment - counted our (two persons and two cats) daily expenses for a month to find out that our monthly expenses have been at about USD 1,800 for that month. You can see my findings with detailed positions in this article: Cost of Living in Tbilisi (Republic of Georgia). I have counted for a few more times - and very often the amount we spend per month in Georgia is more or less the same. From my side I should add we travel a lot across the country...

Average Salary in Georgia 2016 - $ 389

Average salary in the Republic of Georgia at the end of the second quarter (Q2) of 2016 was GEL 1035.98 equaling about USD 389. For the simplicity of further written and calculated, here is the exchange rates I used from Bank of Georgia website on December 14, 2016. USD to GEL: 2.6599 EUR to GEL: 2.8222 If measuring in actual increase that is a huge increase by more than GEL 200 from GEL 773 in 2013. If converted to US dollars that is a drop from $442 in...

Opening Bank Account in Georgia - Bank of Georgia

This is already third time I have opened a bank account in Georgia as an individual. This time at Bank of Georgia. Let me explain -  I'm already using two local banks - Procredit bank and Bank Republic. Unfortunately my default bank for check operations, Bank Republic, has been sold to another large Georgian bank - TBC bank. I opened an account at Bank Republic about two years ago with one single aim - to redeem checks sent from US. This September I read the news and learned...

The other day I was reading an article in which the head of the World Tourism Organization Claimed - Georgia is the most beautiful country in the world. Well, I can ONLY agree with the words from the head of WTO, Mr. Taleb Rifai, and to ad my 50 cents  I have listed 32 places you should visit to make the most from your trip to Georgia. For more cool tourism sights, restaurants or travel options in Georgia - check out  All...

Downshifting blog about Georgia - waystogeorgia.com

The other day - I was contacted by Elene, she introduced me with her project website-  www.waystogeorgia.com which features interviews with people who have moved to Georgia and run interesting projects. I decided to share this blog with you readers, as I really enjoyed it. By now it features few, but pretty strong stories about down shifters from other countries, if you are up for a moving to Georgia and looking for some like minded mates to chat with, at least...

Top 20 Tbilisi and Tskneti Restaurants 2016

Welcome to the subjective TOP 20 Tbilisi and Tskneti restaurant list. This is the second annual Tbilisi restaurant top crafted by me, see TOP 20 Tbilisi restaurants for previous year. In this year top I have extended reach by adding two more great restaurants from Tskneti (suburbs of Tbilisi) as lately I really love to visit this area. Many restaurants and cafeterias from last years list haven't made into this years top, simply I haven't visited them lately and that...

Introducing New Section - All About Georgia

Everyday readers of this blog are already familiar - author of this blog has been spending his days in Georgia for more than five years (since 2011). I have traveled Georgia forth and back, with just two major destinations been excluded from my travel map - regions of Svaneti and Racha. I hope I will cover these parts of Georgia anytime soon. Since author of this blog is an eager Drupal developer (you can hire me for your next Drupal web dev project) and fan of Geo tagging - there...

I Will Miss This Tbilisi Wall

I have observed this wall for the last three years (with short interruptions, when on longer travels) from our Tbilisi balcony. Probably, right at this wallI started to improve my photographer skills when about two years ago I reported first time lapse - Brick Wall turning green. Looking on this wall I have spent countless hours by zooming, experimenting with f stops, changing lenses and so on, making many photographs for my 365 days photo challenge project. The following picture is...

Invest in Georgia - Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending - Mintos.com

After almost five years spent as an ex-pat and passive investor (savings accounts only) in Republic of Georgia, time after time I'm looking for some other liquid investment opportunities in Georgia. Mostly I end up with stock exchange, but for now Georgian Stock Exchange market doesn't seems transparent enough and easy accessible. By saying - not enough transparent I mean - I haven't find yet a broker offering real-time stats.  Time after time I end up in official Invest in Georgia...

How to Get around in Tbilisi by Taxify (Taxi Mobile Application)

There is a very convenient way of getting around in Tbilisi by taxi using mobile application Taxify. I probably first heard of this company at the end of 2014 by visiting Georgian Startup challenge organized by GITA.  For my travels around Tbilisi I mostly use taxi either by calling to the central or just by catching taxi on the street (I prefer second over first still). Taxis are cheap in Tbilisi, but you never know about cars technical condition, the cabin...

Actual Price Index at Tbilisi Market - March 2016

Yup, another hipster style article about actual prices for consumer goods at local Tbilisi market (Bazroba). It has been a while since I decided to measure how lari/dolar exchange rates influence actual prices, if you, just like me are an expat living in Georgia - you most probably have faced the consequences of weak lari against US dollar. Thus - I don't believe that foreign currency should affect local economy. National currency of Georgia is lari and lari we are spending...

New Design and Upgraded Security for Lari (GEL) Banknotes

On February 1st, 2016 the National Bank of Georgia issued upgraded Lari banknotes. It was mid February when first upgraded banknote ended up im my hands, I got it at local Procredit ATM.  My first thought was that I have probably by accident pressed EUR account instead of GEL and have taken my money from EUR account, but then I realized it's a new upgraded currency. After I took the following photo I shortly spent it on groceries at local Dezerteer Bazaar. New 50 GEL banknote...

Wizz Air: Opens Seven New Routes From Kutaisi Airport

Budget travelers - rejoice - 7 new routes will be launched from Kutaisi airport in Georgia. Berlin, Munich Memmingen, Milan Bergamo, Dortmund, Thessaloniki,  Larnaca and Sofia I believe it is just a next logical move from Wizz Air, after recently European Union agreed to lift Visa requirements for Georgians entering European Union. Could this possibly mean a new start of possible immigration wave? Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern...

Netflix available in Republic of Georgia

Seems I have missed the news  -  starting January 6, 2016 Netflix video streaming on demand is available in Republic of Georgia (and some 130 other countries) - that's fantastic news! I first heard about Netflix probably back in 2012, during a US trip, back then I was only wishing such service would be available in Georgia. Now, it is! I rushed to activate my account on Netflix and was pleasantly surprised to notice a free one month trial. After then it's just EUR 7.99...

Cost of Living in Tbilisi (Republic of Georgia)

This post is a result of an experiment I performed for one month in October 2015, I counted my everyday expenses and summed it up to see how much actually it costs to live in Georgia. This information might be useful if you are planing to move to Georgia or just to compare how your country stands to Georgia. For tracking my (our) everyday expenses I installed Expense Manager Android app on my phone and entered spending just after purchases.  Total expenses in October 2015 In October...
