Some potential customer of mine would like to build an intranet site after several meetings we have negotiated we could use Open Atrium for building a companies intranet site.

Honestly speaking I'm not very familiar with Open Atrium, and I have ambivalent feelings regarding this.

I can only agree that OA probably is one of the best open source solutions for your companies intranet, on the other hand it involves a huge learning curve, even for me. It took me several hours to find where the default overrides come from, documentation kinda suck or is to technical even for me.

At few stages I even considered to screw Open Atrium and build it from scratch, but then again I come back realizing that I would need to build all those features from scratch. For now it seems OA intranet will be a project I will work for next couple of months, learning it and mastering it, meanwhile providing end product to customer.

What is Open Atrium?

Open Atrium is open source collaboration software that enables organizations to securely connect their teams, projects, and knowledge. A powerful solution, Open Atrium’s framework allows your organization to easily integrate your existing software, while remaining flexible enough to change as your organization grows. With Open Atrium, you can better communicate, educate, and inform your organization by creating solutions such as an intranet, social collaboration platform, web portal, or learning management system.

Why Open Atrium?

Powerful enough to accomplish more for your organization. Flexible enough to work with systems you're already using. Open enough to take your organization forward.

Powerful Data Security

A collaboration platform is only as good as its security. Control exactly who has access to what content, and clearly see content privacy settings on every single page.

Extensible Architecture

Integrate, don’t reinvent. Open Atrium’s platform provides the flexibility to integrate with modules, custom code, or established software you work with now.

No Licensing Fees

As with all open source, Open Atrium is free software. New features will never send you into a new “pricing tier,” and recurring licensing fees are a thing of the past.

Robust Asset Management

Documents, images, and video are a part of the work you do. Open Atrium allows you to seamlessly access, store, attach, embed, and collaborate around these assets.

Built to Scale

Build a small departmental intranet or a multi-site portal. The choice is yours, and it can change as your company grows. Open Atrium's flexible framework is built to scale.

No Vendor Lock-In

Because it is open source, no one vendor controls the growth and development of the software, which means you are in control of who’s working on your project.

Cohesive, Unified Platform

Open Atrium can be the one-stop-shop that replaces -- or integrates -- the disparate systems you’ve been using.

Customizable Look & Feel

Pre-loaded responsive templates, drag-and-drop widgets, a configurable header for each space, and unlimited color choices means customizing your site’s look and feel doesn’t require code changes.

Community Innovation

The force multiplier of an open source community working together to create, improve, and extend functionality allows you to respond to emerging web trends, without having to rely on any single vendor.
