Few months ago during a hiking trip in an amazing Birtvisi Canyon (Republic of Georgia) I first started to "fantasy" about a drone photography. Back then, shortly returning from this trip I started to do some basic research on drones (what's popular, prices e.t.c.) and created the ultimate list of Best Drone To Buy in 2015. 

Now since I have been into a photography as well, I decided to take a closer look on drones for photographers / photography and here is what I have found: DJI Phantom still is the king among drones / quad copters. Skrunda bus station is a regional bus station serving local Latvian cities and town. It mainly serves Riga and Liepaja route, but you can get from here to Kuldīga, Kazdanga and other local routes. If you are heading to Skrunda by bus you can either hire some local taxi here or walk to the closely located Skrunda abandoned military town (Distance ~ 6km).

Speaking of this station building - for me it looks like a pretty standard Soviet time architecture built from a concrete.

Rudzisu Stone

We discovered Rudzisu Stone (Rudzīšu akmens) by accident driving  some remote roads in Latvian countryside. What at start seemed an easy task turned to be a mini hiking tour. Although there is a tourist sign right next to the road some (perhaps you) will need walk to this stone some 500 meters (at least) from that road. You will have a chance to meet some snails, cross two wooden bridges, dive into a spooky forest in case you are up to for this mini hiking tour.

Here are approximate coordinates for this stone: Latvia, Kuldiga district, Laidi municipality, 300 m E from Snepele - Kazdanga road, in small gully 140 m N from Rudzisi.

Pretty impressive, right? The moss covered limestone block reminded me a little bit from my recent hiking in Birtvisi canyon (Republic of Georgia)

Well, they missed to inform you will have to cross some meadow, dive into a forest, cross two wooden bridges, but hey - it's cool.

About Rudzisi stone

Rudzisi stone is a 4,7 m long, 3,6 m wide and up to 2,2 m high Siluric limestone block. It has been rbought by glacier from the area of contemporary Estonia. Limestone is not hardy and in general is crumbled by glacier but here by some conincidence large piece has been preserved.

Berghof Restaurant Review in Dairy Manor, Sieksāte, Latvia

This restaurant is located inside the Dairy Manor Berghof complex. During my visit at this complex I had a chance to try a local delicacy like salmon tartar at this restaurant. I learned there exists a gadget called a tea timer while I enjoyed my meal here.

 Dairy Manor (Piena Muiža in Latvian) Berghof is located in the remote Latvian village of Sieksāte some 160 km from capital Riga. This manor complex serves a hotel, restaurant, museum and a lovely park.

Food here is prepared pretty good while price for the food served here is asked a bit too high. Interior and location is just excellent.

My Germany and The Netherlands Travel Guide

Dairy Manor (Piena Muiža in Latvian) Berghof is located in the remote Latvian village of Sieksāte some 160 km from capital Riga. This manor complex serves a hotel, retaurant, museum and a lovely park.

I did spent quite a lot of time photographing both back view and front view. Best technique I found here were laying down on the grass, which led me to think I should buy some mattress pad for such photography technique.

If you just like me are into fortification systems you will definitely enjoy The Northern Forts of Liepaja.

Built by Imperial Russia at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of 20th century to provide the protection of Liepāja’s naval base in case of enemy attack. According to history - In November of 1908, Tsar Nicholas II approved a decision to shut down the sea fortress in Liepāja. It has been now over 100 years since these fortification walls don't function anymore and just recently they have been placed on tourist maps.

In recent years The Northern Forts of Liepāja have been placed on local tourism guides and nowadays everyone is welcome to visit them.

About The Northern Forts

The Northern Forts are a part of Liepāja’s fortress. The fortress was built at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of 20th century to provide the protection of Liepāja’s naval base in case of an enemy attack. The line of the outer fortification system surrounded the whole city.

In November of 1908, Tsar Nicholas II approved a decision to shut down the sea fortress in Liepāja. Some of the cannons were dismounted and brought to the Kaunas fortress in Lithuania, others were melted. There was an attempt to blow up the gun batteries, the underground structures, and the gunpowder depots but this did not prove effective. So nowadays we can still see the remains of the newest and the most up-to-date fortress of the Tsar’s Russia.

You have the possibility to visit the Northern forts on a guided tour.

You can participate in the game “Escape from the USSR”. The aim of the game is to act as a team in order to find a friend who has been taken as a prisoner by soviet border guards and to take him safely to the submarine.

Caffe 'Lielā Pietura' literally translates as 'The Great Stop' and there is no surprise of this name, this cafeteria is actually located close to the ... a bus stop in Grobiņa, connecting capital city Rīga with Liepāja. This cafeteria serves traditional Latvian cuisine for a very reasonable price.

The Bottom Line

Caffe 'Lielā Pietura' indeed is a Great stop when travelling to or from Liepāja city. Prices here are much lower than in capital city. Deserts are just tremendously tasty. Definitely worth of a visit.

Livonian Order Castle Ruins at Aizpute

I have always been into a digging stuff and walking around old ancient sites is just one of my favorite activities to do. Also I'm into a history. So it's no surprise I visited a site called Livonian Order Castle Ruins at Aizpute.

If you are not familiar with what a Livonian Order actually is - in short: The Livonian Order was an autonomous branch of the Teutonic Order and a member of the Livonian Confederation from 1435 to 1561. If you are up to for a longer version, please read this article on Wikipedia: Livonian Order

About Aizpute Livonian Order Castle Ruins

At the beginning of the 19th century, when the castle was only partly inhabited, the manor owners lived in the new landlord’s house. It was built in the second half of the 18th century, not far from the castle, on the other side of the mill pond. Next to the pond there was also a mill, a distillery, and adjacent to the landlord’s house – farm buildings. Aizpute’s Lutheran congregation’s church and the former castle-manor building complex form a unified town planning ensemble with a watermill, pond and dam on the Tebra River.

The Order castle of a regular plan castellum type, with a corner tower and wooden buildings in the courtyard, was built in the 13th-14th centuries. In the 15th century, an eastern wing was built on the outside next to the castle wall. After the Livonian War the castle was no longer used and written sources reveal that in 1555 it was mentioned as a grain store. At the end of the 16th century – early 17th century, the castle was restored.

Plastering with ornate and rich decorative finish in a sgraffito technique remains in the courtyard above the gates since that time. In the mid 17th century, during the Polish-Swedish War, the castle was heavily damaged, then restored in 1665, and Duke Jacob’s garrison and artillery team was stationed there. After the death of Duke Jacob, in 1682 the castle came into the possession of Mihael Friedrich Nolde. The castle lost the character of a fortified construction, was reconstructed, and a residential block was added inside the protective walls.

Even now the castle is gradually losing its importance as a residential building and is only partly inhabited. Over the time, the courtyard level has increased by 1.5 m. At the beginning of the 19th century the current gently sloping brick vaults and the new dividing walls were built for the castle’s eastern wing and the south eastern tower. At the beginning of the 20th century the castle was almost unusable, and currently a part of it is a bad condition. The castle walls and ceilings are in a terrible condition: the roof of the building is partly gone, all of the first floor ceiling and load bearing partition walls have collapsed, mantel chimneys have been destroyed, part of the cellar vaulted ceiling has collapsed, and the rest is in a bad condition.

Reconstruction work was commenced in 1990, but was suspended. There have been a number of inspections undertaken. In 1997, a plan was developed to anchor the walls and for the construction of the roof which was partly done in the D wing section. In 1999, there was a limited castle wall conservation performed for a small part of the castle section on the right wing – a tiled roof was erected.

Aizpute Saint John’s church

The Saint John evangelic Lutheran church in Aizpute is one of the oldest churches in Courland, historical region of Latvia.  On a rainy day I took my DSLR camera and headed to Aizpute Church mound to photograph this ancient site. Latter I was surprised to learn that on this place, prior a church were built was an ancient Curonian castle.

According to chronic's, prior to church building here, there was and Curonian fortress.

The only one decent photo of Aizpute Saint John's church I managed to capture from this mound. To get a more interesting photos you should photograph this place from opposite located Livonian Castle and have some good glass (lenses). Well I will leave it for next time.

About Aizpute Saint John's Church

On the opposite side of Aizpute castle ruins, on the right side of the river Tebra is the 16 meters high Curonian castle mount (now church mount). In the year  1254, in the place where German crusaders robbed and ruined the ancient Curonian castle, a castle was built.

The Saint John evangelic Lutheran church has been renovated and rebuilt and today it is one of the oldest churches in Courland. Up until 16th century Catholicism was preached, but after that it was given to the evangelic Lutheran congregation. In 1571 the first Lutheran priest Johanim Reming, who worked here for 43 years. The church has been rebuilt many times – the tower was built in 1730, the altar in the late 19th century, but it got it’s nowadays look in 1860.

The bell of the church is also very noteworthy, which 400 years ago (in 1589) after re-casting started to ring again. There is an organ built by the famous German company “Sauer” in 1904, also there are paintings like “Kristus Ģetzemanes dārzā” (Christ in the garden of Gethsemane)(J.I. Egniks, 1833) and “Krustā sistais”(The one nailed to the cross)(J.F. Vāgners, 1864) and to the right from the altar you can see the gravestone of the bishop of Courland H.Bazedovs.

Aizpute Saint John Lutheric church is one of the oldest churches in Courland, it is a national architectural monument and it is included in the European cultural heritage list.

Kazdanga Mill Lake And Its Surroundings

Kazdanga Mill lake (Dzirnezers, Dzirnavu ezers in Latvian) and its surroundings is lovely I would even say a touristic place in a small Latvian village of Kazdanga.

Someone (perhaps you) will find a lot of outdoor activities to do here - starting boat ride on that lake ending cycling around this area, I learned that you can even smoke a fish here (didn't try)

Located in a very close distance to the impressive Kazdanga manor Kazdanga Mill Lake and its surroundings is a must-have attraction while you are in Kazdanga.

The mill was built in 1840, it has been completely rebuilt and only the external façade provides a small insight into the times, while the mill dam is very well preserved.

The mill lake or mill pond is flooded on the Alokste River and there are many springs in its depths and banks, so the depth is unequal.
