How To Set Event Based Google Analytics Goals - Amazon Affiliate Links Tracking Example

In this article I will guide you through - how one (perhaps you) can define custom even based goals in Google Analytics reports - and I will give you a real example - how to track Outbound links to Amazon.

With this post I'm starting a new topic series in my blog - Web Analytics. I have already previously covered different topics related to web analytic you might find useful.

So, now let's go back on our topic subject - Setting Goals:

Goals are everything, right?

Before we are speaking of goals, be sure you have already registered for Google Analytics and your website visitor are counted. If you, just like me are a Drupal friend - here is a quick reference how to add Google Analytics to your Drupal website.

Please note - to use my suggested option for tracking outbound links - you should use Universal Google Analytics tracking code:

Now, we are willing to setup an event based goal to track our Outbound link to Amazon site.

Give a name for your Goal and choose Event

First set Category to equal Outbound links, then Label - Regular expression - www.amazon.com (I found this combination effective)

How to track Outbound links in Google Analytics

Google Analytics give's you  a tool to Verify your Goal - you can use this tool, to verify  - is your goals settings correct. Here is what I got by verifying my goal:

One another option you could setup for such goal - Goal Value. But here you need to now average earnings you receive from a click to Amazon or any other affiliate site you are tracking)

By knowing my averages I will set my goal value to $1 (and later I can adjust it).

By now we have setup our event based goal to track our Amazon affiliate links. Now we should see it in work.

Now, when we have our reports created, in our Google Analytics we should see something similar to this in our Google Analytics reports:

Goal 2 in my case means clicks to Amazon.

As you can see from image above I had an overall Conversation Rate of 4.29% . 

And now - the most important part - what drives the conversations?

Yup, in this image you can see that Organic Search is responsible for all the conversation rates in that day. 

It's important to measure each traffic channel separate, to better understand which channel works best for you.

Now you got your understanding why it's important to have on board such a powerful tool as Google Analytics equipped with Goal Values.

They can help you drive your online business - pointing you to bottlenecks or any other issues related to your website.

Google Analytics are not just for measuring visitor count - if handed to right hands - it might be one of the most powerful tools.

SEO Best Practices for Drupal 7: Managing No-Follow and Do-Follow Links

Learn how to implement nofollow external links while still maintaining dofollow internal links on your Drupal website in this tutorial.

It's important to understand the reasons why you should consider this option, especially with the Google Panda and Penguin algorithms constantly fighting low-quality websites. To stay safe, it's best to avoid copy-pasting or scrapping content, and minimize the number of low-quality internal and external links.

For better on-site SEO, avoid using dofollow links to affiliate sites or advertisements, and steer clear of link schemes. For instance, if you're writing a blog post reviewing products and places, it's acceptable to add external links, but be wary of adding too many dofollow links to affiliate products to avoid getting penalized.

Anyway - the purpose of this article is not to guess how many links should be fine on your site, but how to nofollow external links on your Drupal site.

By default, Drupal is offering to use text format filters, and one of the options is to set all links to "nofollow"

When I first started - I decided to nofollow completely all links I have, but here is the reason why it's wrong - 

Main reason why it is wrongs is simple - you are not only nofollowing all external links, but you are nofollwing both all internal links.

Internal links are crucial for your on-site SEO.

So I started to investigate what options do I have - first option is to set nofollow links by hand, but this option is not for me - it might be time consuming. And since I already have a blog with plenty of posts, it would mean I should go through all the blog posts I have, and manual add nofollow attribute. 

Another option - I searched for - to use some custom Drupal module  - and for a luck I did find one - what does exactly what I need - Noindex External Links (this is a nofollow link)

This module seems have been built exclusively for Runet (Russian Internet space) for Yandex search engine optimization. But it does still offers option to add nofollow for external links.

All you have to do, is to download and install this module (this is a dofollow link) to your Drupal site and do some basic setup:

Head to admin/config/search/noindex_external_links and mark check next to Add atribute rel="nofollow" to links:

On the same settings page add your domain names, you would like to be dofollowed (for example your website or blog URL)

There is one more thing to configure, before it will actually start to work - go to your text format filters page, and mark check next to Noindex External links (admin/config/content/formats/<your-format>)

Basically, that's it - now you have formatted your external links to be nofollow while your internal links stay dofollow.

Bonus 

You would like (and I recommend that you have it) to open any external link in a new tab - again you have a few options, but for a quick reference I will suggest to you use External links module.

Luca Polare - One Of The Best Ice Creams In Tbilisi

I have decided to start a new post series - Tbilisi restaurants.

As you might already know I'm an expat living in Georgia (Tbilisi).

 I'm a huge lover of restaurants and coffee shops, and since living in Georgia I have came even a bigger fan of eating outside the home. 

Since I'm eating out pretty regular - there are my favourite places, then there are places, that once was my favourite places, and then there are places better to avoid. 

I'm willing to make an description of them and to photograph the food I have tasted on those places.

Perhaps on such decision I came after making a post of Fine Dining places in Yerevan, when I forget the names and locations for lovely Yerevan restaurants. Not any more!

Please note, this is just my subjective opinion.  For taking photographs I'm using my Samsung phone and using Instagram (then taking them from Instagram and adding to posts - you can read a blog post on how I turned my Instagram account into a photo blog - speaking of what - I decided there is no need and place to keep up with 2 blogs - so I decided to shot tourgeorgia down - and starting today - any restaurant,  sightseeing places will be found on my blog exclusively)

Now, back on the subject

Luca Polare

Discovered this lovely coffee shop - or more precisely - ice cream shop almost by accident. I have seen their logo and Ice Cream signboard in streets of Tbilisi, but never had tried them (or maybe I'm wrong - and actually I have been their customer for a long time - I'm speaking of small boutique shop in Old Tbilisi)

This time I'm speaking of a large coffee shop with an outdoor terrace, located on Aghmeneshabeli avenue

There is wide choice of ice creams available at Luca Polare  -  my favourite is tiramisu , and the price is pretty good - it's like chose anything you like - you pay GEL 2.9 for 100 gr or one scoop. 

One of the nice features at this place - they have an ice cream machine, where you can take you ice cream, and add anything you like on it, I mean there is a salad bar (fruit bar) - so you can add strawberries, blueberries, chocolate e.t.c on your ice cream.

If you are not for the ice cream - you can have some sweets here. Didn't try them this time, but I do believe they are delicious

Seems the price for ice cream and sweets are equal - GEL 2.9 - that's pretty nice.

The have excellent coffee here as well - didn't seen here my favourite Turkish coffee, but tried cappuccino for GEL 4.9

Luca Polare is a great place, offering great ice cream (and other tasty good) for valuable price - with no doubts I'm recommending it to you.

Celebrating Birthday in Yerevan, Armenia - Roundup

This post is a round up post from my birthday celebrations in capital of Armenia, Yerevan, at start of the August.

Idea of visiting Armenia, arise soon after I decided it might be fishy to flight to Mestia (Georgia). That was first option - to visit mountainous region of Svaneti in Georgia. I even expressed my joy, learning that regular flights has been launched from Tbilisi to Mestia. After several attempts to contact aircraft-carrier - they didn't expressed much trust for me - like - on questions, when is the flights, where are they from (it's some airfield out of Tbilisi) - the answers were typical lame - call tomorrow e.t.c. So screw you Mestia - it's time for Armenia.

This was not the first time we headed to Yerevan, Armenia, this was second time this year, and third time in total. Seems I'm found of Armenia.

So we did quickly found a car transfer service from Tbilisi to Yerevan, and our trip started.

We arrived at early morning in Yerevan, and first thing first - we headed to VivaCell-MTS to get an Armenian SIM card and mobile internet.

As it turned out - our check-in in hotel started at 2:00 PM. We had a plenty time to spend in Yerevan. The problem - we were damned tired. For a starter we headed to Marriott Hotel to enjoy morning coffee with delicious hand made truffles.

Then we decided we should at least find a precise location for our hotel, since it was in the city centre, and we were in centre - we thought there should be no problems of finding it. Actually there were no problems at all - it's just to dramatize my tale.

Our first strange experience happened at the supermarket - Moskvichka

In this lovely store, with very Russian name, even written in Cyrilc I tried to speak Russian with sales persons. And for a surprise for me, they all as one objected on that - and kindly asked me to speak in English. I asked the simple question - Why does personal at Moskvichka store avoids to speak Russian?

Anyway - the tensions with Russian language in Armenia I have observed already in previous trips to Yerevan. The most funny fact is that - everyone knows Russian language, but some people pretends they don't.

This is phenomena I have observed in other Post-Soviet countries as well.

Anyway - the ambivalent feelings accompanied us all the stay in Yerevan, to know when to speak Russian and when it's better to speak English. For example, taxi drivers will prefer Russian, while at the hotel they will speak English.

Enough about strange multilingualism in the streets of Yerevan.

We still had a plenty of time till check-in in our hotel, and I suggested that we should visit The Cascade of Yerevan - much heard, but never before seen. Said - done! We grabbed a taxi and went straight to the top of Yerevan Cascade.

Next day was my birthday, and we strated our day by heading to Yerevan Mall, where I got a really nice gift - a scarf.

After couple of spent hours in Yerevan Mall, where I found new Carrefour store is to be opened soon, we headed to famous Erebuni Fortress

How To Get Pre-Paid SIM Card In Armenia - VivaCell-MTS

<p>During my short two days trip to Yerevan in Armenia, I decided I will need a local SIM card to make calls and browse internet.</p><blockquote><p>There are three mobile phone operators currently in Armenia: Viva Cell MTS, Orange and Beeline. Orange and Beeline only offer 2G and 3G services. Viva Cell MTS offers both 2G and 3G as well as 4G services. All three networks are widely modern and reliable with shops located in major towns and cities where one can purchase a sim card or get assistance if needed. Most unlocked mobile phones are able to be used on roaming however network charges apply. Orange and Viva Cell MTS are often recommended to tourists due to the variety of tariffs available and the help available in a variety of languages.</p></blockquote><p>I was really surprised being informed by taxi driver who took us to Yerevan, that you can have a Pre-Paid SIM card bought at VivaCell-MTS office near Marriott Hotel (Republic square) in centre of Yerevan - 24/7.</p><p>I followed taxi drivers advice and went to VivaCell-MTS office around 6.00 AM. That's right - they are opened 24/7.</p><p>I briefly explained my needs for SIM card and internet - and the bartender asked my passport, gave me few papers to sign, and I had my own Armenian SIM card on my phone, with internet activated on it.</p><p>The standard price for such a SIM card is 500 Armenian Drams (What equals to less than EUR 1), from which 400 Drams are deposited on your balance. I paid additional some 600 Drams, just to make sure it will be enough for internet browsing.</p><p>They do have some special codes, which pressing on your phone could offer you a lower cost for international calls, or to activate internet. I got some special code for cheaper international calls - costing about 90 Drams per minute. Could it be even better? I mean 90 Drams equals to EUR 0.16 or $0.22. <strong>I mean it's totally for free.</strong></p><p><a href="http://mts.am/en/individual-customers/tariffs-and-discounts/all-tariffs… more about tariffs and discounts</a></p><p>The Unlimited Internet is for 100 or 200 Drams per day. Fine Dining Places In Yerevan

During our short 2 day trip to Yerevan, Armenia, in time we celebrated my 29th birthday - we tasted a lot of great Armenian and European food. 

Now, looking through my Instagram account - I decided to add photos of food I have taken with my Android phone. Unfortunately I don't remember precise locations and names for many of those lovely Yerevan restaurants, but still it's pleasant to view some food photos.

We started our food adventures at Marriott Hotel in Centre of Yerevan at 6 AM.

We didn't use any alcoholic beverages here - instead we had a fine coffee with delicious Armenian truffles. One of the best truffles I have tasted. Our overall cheque here was about EUR 15

After couple of hours, we stop at the Olivia place. Kinda Italian restaurant.

Nothing special here, but they have breakfast menu here for 1000 Drams (About EUR 1.83)- scrambled eggs. Coffee, tea, soda must be paid separate. Overall cheque here some EUR 10

Then we found an excellent place for dinner - at bottom of the Yerevan cascade, there is Paulaner restaurant

We took chefs special - steak, potatoes and grilled vegetables. Some additional Eastern Coffee (Don't try to order "Turkish coffee" in Armenia - they call it Eastern or Armenian coffee) Coca Cola - overall cheque here some EUR 15

We continued this evening with more dinning out in fabulous Yerevan restaurants, next choice was made thanks to the taxi drivers recommendation:

I was quite naive and looking through menu - I decided I would like to have Rhsta Halva for desert - as I thought it is some Eastern sweet - turned out it's just cookies blended with condensed milk. Delicious, but far from Eastern sweets.

Speaking of menu at this place (Damned, I cannot remember the name - something Caucasian...) - this menu is over-flooded with items and it was really hard to decide.

So I stick with Adana (chicken barbecue with grilled vegetables)

We ordered kabab here as well - Again - it's nowhere on earth were meat is so tasty

And Kubdari (Caucasian traditional meat pie) - here it was so wrongly prepared, filled with spinach, that I refused to eat this Armenian Kubdari (So far - best Kubdari I have found just in Georgia)

Next morning was my birthday morning and we enjoyed our free meal at our hotel - Republica Hotel Yerevan

In the evening we again headed to Yerevan Cascade and again to Paulaner's place, this time opposite to first one. This Paulaner resaturant was a grill bar. Actually a nice neat, to have a two restaurants each one opposite to other.

And we ended evening with cheeseballs

Please forgive me my forgetfulness - that I cannot remember all the names for those lovely places. In total for two days in Yerevan we spent something between 50 and 70 EUR for food. For really delicious food.

Those of you looking to travel from Tbilisi to Yerevan, or from Yerevan to Tbilisi, you have few options to choose - I'm not 100% sure but one of the options is by plain, the second option is by train, the third option by bus, another option by minibus (marshrutka) - the best option so far I have found is by private taxi car.

Actually, I have never traveled to Yerevan by plane or train from Tbilisi. I'm always choosing a private taxi car.

By saying a taxi car - I do not mean a regular taxi - you can chase on every street corner. Probably you can get with them too to Yerevan, but the price might be too pricey.

There are literally tons of privately held - semi-official, unofficial firms that offer Tbilisi - Yerevan transfers.

Best of it - they will pick you up at your place, you don't even have to go to some special place in the city to be picked up. You can negotiate about best times you want to go e.t.c.

Private taxis are a very convenient way to travel from Tbilisi to Yerevan and back

Now let's talk about the price!

The price will vary - but typically they are asking 50 GEL per person for one direction (see comment section for updated prices). To make it easy to calculate for you - 50 GEL equals $29 or EUR 22. This is the same price you would pay for the train or marshrutka.

Actually, the price could be easily bargained down to 35 GEL ($20 /EUR15)

Anyway, the driver should agree for 100 GEL in total. Depending on how many passengers you are - (the maximum one car can take is 4) - the price will vary.

How to find Tbilisi - Yerevan taxi cars?

One option is to search them in Avlabari (close to Avlabari metro station), another option is in Ortachala station.

Aram took us from Yerevan back to Tbilisi for 35 GEL back in 2014 (we were 3 passengers in a car)

Aram was a pretty "crazy" driver and he took us through very beautiful but a bit dangerous road, near Lake Sevan up near the border of Azerbaijan. Aram was so excited to drive here, to watch Armenian snipers. But he agreed - that if a passenger asks for safety reasons he can avoid this dangerous road.

Any time you like you can ask a car driver to stop. We did so in one of the Armenian town-lets to buy delicious meat.

About crossing Georgian/Armenian border

You definitely should have your passport with you. Depending on times you arrive at border point - there could be and there could be not a queue. On the Georgian side, you will be asked to step out of the car and to cross the border by foot with your belongings.

On the Armenian side, you will stay in your car. The border crossing doesn't take more than 15-20 minutes (usually).

On the Armenian side, the driver will need to fill out some customs information, so you can enjoy your time, by visiting some coffee on the border.

Oh, yeah in Georgian side there is Tax-Free shopping available.

Those privately held semi-official (unofficial) taxi companies are one of the best ways for fast transfers between Tbilisi and Yerevan. The drives usually take some 4 and a half to 6 hours. The price varies starting at 35 - 50 GEL per person. It's recommended you know some basic Russian or at least have a Russian-speaking assistant who could help you arrange this transfer.

We made a reservation for Republica Hotel Yerevan during our trip to Armenia, to celebrate my birthday on August 6th to August 8th. We chose this hotel - mainly because of it's location (it's located on lively street Amiryan in centre of Yerevan) and it's price (for 2 nights it was 92 000 Armenian Drams, what equals to about EUR 166 or USD 220)

Flat Screen TV is a must have option in every hotel in over days - unfortunately this TV had just some 17 TV channels, some 6 of them was Armenian, 2 or 3 Russian, and rest was some news channels - Euronews, BBC news, Bloomberg. I guess they had one German channel and one Italian. Anyway it was kinda boring to watch TV here - I mean only option left to us was news channels, which repeats one new 24 hours a day. My recommendations for Republica Hotel Yerevan management - you could add some paid channels at least.

In overall this is a great luxury hotel situated in heart of Yerevan, what offers great value for money paid (I would call this price a little bit low - but it seems that in Armenia everything is a little bit cheaper, at least when compared to neighbouring Georgia)

Erebuni Fortress

Erebuni Fortress is an ancient site situated in the capital of Armenia, Yerevan.

I had heard of this place before, but hadn't visited it in my two previous trips to Yerevan. This time I decided to change that. Actually this was my birthday I visited this place. My overall impressions? Well... Let the photos speak for themself:

We took a taxi from Yerevan Mall, and taxi driver took from us 1000 Dram, although the fare-meter showed 800 Drams. I didn't argued much with taxi driver, because of 1000 Drams equals to EUR 1.83

Since we took our way to Erebuni fortress from the other side  - not typical front - we had an opportunity to see the Real Erebuni Fortress, and in fact, the reality it looks as abandoned place.

Since we started our discoveries from top of the Erebuni Fortress our travels ended here at these gates, but seems that it's an option to climb up from here - what I do not recommend, instead take a taxi, drive up in the hill and climb down.

About Erebuni Fortress

Erebuni Fortress, also known as Arin Berd (meaning the "Fortress of Blood") is a fortified city from the ancient kingdom of Urartu, located in what is present-day Yerevan, Armenia. It was one of several fortresses built along the northern Urartian border and was one of the most important political, economic and cultural centers of the vast kingdom. The name Yerevan itself is derived from Erebuni.

Architecture

The site of Erebuni Fortress was located atop the 65 m tall hill of Arin Berd as a strategic position overlooking the Ararat plain and the main roads leading to the citadel. It also overlooked cramped Urartian town made up of residences below at the foot of the hill. The main entrance to the fortress was located at the more gently sloped southeastern site of the hill. It led to the central yard of the citadel. Ceremonies held by the personal guards of Argishti I and guards of the fortress garrison were held here. In the southwest portion of the yard was a temple of the god Khaldi. The temple had a large oblong plan with a staircase that led to the roof of a ziggurat type tower and a side room on the lower floor. Surrounding the hall was a double-rowed twelve-column open portico with benches along the walls. An altar for sacrifices was located at the left wall. The walls were decorated with colorful frescoes depicting representations of human figures, gods, geometric and floral designs. One of the frescoes uncovered depicts the god Khaldi standing on a lion with a warder in his left hand and a horned crown upon his head. It is typical of other representations of Khaldi found at other sites. The floor of the temple contrasted greatly from the rest of the complex in that it had wood floors composed of small planks, compared to the clay-coated adobe floors that were faced with stone slabs found in the rest of the citadel's rooms.

Yerevan Cascade

One of the top attractions in Yerevan, Armenia is the Cascade - stairways providing probably the most beautiful views of the city. I have been in Yerevan for the third time, but this was the first time I decided to visit Cascade actually. 

We took a taxi from Arminyan street right next to our hotel - Republica, and shortly explained to a taxi driver in Russian - that I want to go there - where the most beautiful photos of Yerevan can be taken - stairways. The taxi driver soon realized I'm talking of Cascade, and promised 1000 Drams took us uphill. I had no idea - what does he mean by uphill - but I agreed. 

Just many years later I learned that the uphills actually is another cool site of Yerevan - Monument to 50 Years of Soviet Armenia in Yerevan

Taxi driver - as he told has 3 times been Master in Box in USSR in weight 52. So no arguing with him, ok? 

After a short drive, we were at top of the Cascade.

From up there - Cascade looks rather demolished and abandoned, that a top attraction of the city.

I must admit until this part - my thoughts about Yerevan Cascade - nothing special, some Abandoned USSR style site, which offers just nice views to Yerevan city, but I was wrong, so wrong!

Starting this level, the real Cascade starts, each level is designed in different style and crafted with different symbols and arts. Although I'm not sure of their meaning - I guess it has some relations to Armenian History

Each level at Cascade comes with a different composition. Each composition contains some elements which meaning I cannot explain

As you can see  - there is impression - there is nothing much to see - just a climb up. That was my thinking for first 2 times I visited Yerevan, I mean - some stairways - come on - nothing interesting. But I was wrong. The stairways or as local call it  - Cascade is worth it. With interesting composition on each level, abandoned construction site at top and breathtaking views of Yerevan city. 

Don't climb bottom - top. Instead - take a taxi, drive up there, and climb down (don't forget your camera)

I was eager to find out more about the meaning of this stairways, and this is what I found on Wikipedia:

The Cascade is a giant stairway in Yerevan, Armenia. It links the downtown Kentron area of Yerevan with the Monument neighborhood.

The construction of the cascade designed by architects Jim Torosyan, Aslan Mkhitaryan, Sargis Gurzadyan was launched in 1971 and completed in 1980.

Inside the Cascade, underneath the exterior steps is a couple of escalators going the length of the complex. There are also rooms connected to some of the landings along the escalators which comprise the Cafesjian Museum of Art.

The exterior of Cascade, in addition to stairs, has multiple levels with fountains and sculptures. The stairs afford walkers unobstructed views of central Yerevan and Mount Ararat.

History of Yerevan Cascade

The construction began in 1971, during the Soviet period.

The first phase was completed in 1980. Further development was implemented between 2002 and 2009 when the complex was handed over to the American-Armenian businessman Gerard Cafesjian in the early 2000s and a complete renovation was performed.

A large museum complex was also planned for the top. Although the construction of the museum was launched, it was frozen in the early stages and has not continued for years.

Setting My First Amazon Affiliate Marketing Goal

Amazon affiliate program is something completely new for me, not to say affiliate marketing as whole is a new thing for me. I have been playing around with Google Adsense for last 5 years (my earnings are still pathetic low - actually, just in two last months I have earned a bit more than $10 per month)

Speaking of Affiliate marketing programs, the one and only I have been using so far - Booking.com affiliate (although the results there sucks too)

Some time ago I started to learn more about affiliate marketing programs - mainly everyone in our days speaks - Adsense is pennies compared to affiliate marketing - and in fact I do believe that.

Take a look at my last online income report - income from affiliate programs in first month is even to my Google Adsense Earnings. 

Since affiliate is new to me - I'm learning it slowly (I'm not even speaking of mastering it).

Before I started to promote Booking hotels - I did setup a modest goal for it - to send 50 visitors in a month to their booking site. After the first month I didn't manage to reach my goal (I stood still at 42 sent visitors) but I believe I will manage to achieve 50 visitors this month.

And so - I'm adding a new affiliate marketing program on board - Amazon.

Setting my first Amazon Affiliate Marketing Goal

Since I'm total newbie to Amazon (although I have been doing online shopping there in rarely occasions) - I decided to set my first Amazon affiliate goal really low - to send 35 visitors to their site.

Yes, that is my first goal starting my journey with Amazon partner program - send 35 visitors in a month to their website.

I'm not talking about making any actual purchases right now. I do not believe that number 35 is enough to make any orders to happen - although some claims that Amazon haves one of the highest CTR in web industry - about 10%. It sounds tempting - in ideal scenario it would mean 3.5 orders from 35 sent visitors. But again - I doubt that. I'm not doubting about Amazon's ability to convert those users - I doubt I will send qualified leads at now.

What is the commission structure paid to Amazon Affiliates

Well, compared to other affiliate programs it's really low, as it seems no for me. Amazon is paying 4% - 8.5% commission to their affiliates per ordered product. In case you are promoting some low-priced items - your commission will be low as well. If you are promoting some hi-tech your commission still low but more impressive compared to those low-priced items.

My strategy is simple - I will promote products starting $100, hopping it will give me pretty OK commission. 

The thing is  - as I believe - the work and time you spend for promoting low or high priced items are equal - and right now - I'm opting to put my efforts on high priced items. 

Amazon Commission Structure

I must admit that it's pretty tempting to overpass 6 shipped/downloaded items per month to raise basic commission from 4% to 6%. Probably one of the options to bypass 4% line is by selling some amount of cheaper, low-priced, easy to sell items (Perhaps some books?)
