Kazdanga Manor

Kazdanga manor is located in Courland historical region of  Latvia.

As I have already stated back when visited Snēpele manor -  Latvia is a land of old manor houses and palaces, they dates back from the times when German nobles ruled this territory. A lot of manors one (perhaps you) can find in a historical region of Courland. 

As usual, I took my camera and headed here to photograph this manor.

I spent a few minutes on this cobble playing with my gorilla pad and my cameras aperture settings, and in fact, I really enjoy this image.

I did find some similarities in this image with Chateau Mukhrani back in Georgia. This time I didn't use a tripod.

Speaking of this Kazdanga manor - it turns out there is a local museum located inside. I didn't visit it because of I'm more fond of architecture. But you should give it a try (to visit a museum)

Kazdanga Palace is located in the village Kazdanga , Latvia. The first manor house was made out of wood and the new palace was built in 1800-1804 in the late classical style, designed according to the project by the German architect J. G. Berlitz. Kazdanga established the first Latvian fish pond, now in operation for a number of important agricultural schools.

The palace was built in the years 1800-1804 in the style of late classicism, built by the project of Johann Gottfried Adam Berlitz. There is a stone bridge, leading to the palace. On the other side of the river, there are remnants of the manor buildings; the house of the servants, stables, the house of the steward and barns. The palace was burned down by local peasants during the Revolution of 1905. However, German baron von Manteuffel renovated it by the project of Paul Schultze-Naumburg in 1907. The renovation of the Kazdanga palace became an important event for the development of the Neo-Classicism style. It was designed by the well known German architect and Neo-Classicism Paul Schultze-Naumburg. In contrast to scenic, borrowed forms, the architect declared a return to the Homeland tradition and accuracy.

The reconstruction of the Kazdanga palace demonstrated a new approach by the architect to the original image of the building. It is noteworthy that the palace, designed in about 1800, was one of the most splendid monuments of Classicism architecture in Courland. Its restoration served as a starting point for reevaluating both patterns of pure Classicism and local building traditions. Even elements of scientific restoration could be observed in the course of reconstruction. The principle of historical verity was important in designing the interiors and replicas of the furniture that had been destroyed.

During the First World War, the palace was again devastated. It was rebuilt between 1925-1927. In 1930 the Kazdanga Agricultural Trade School was housed in the palace. The school is still situated there. Near to the palace is a house of chevaliers. It has well preserved interior, like baroque style stairs and ornamented parquet floor.

When I was back in Germany and visited Germany's most visited landmark - The Cologne's Cathedral my travel mate said to me - it (Cologne's Cathedral) doesn't impress me as much as Valtaiķi church in Latvia. I looked at her - and asked, what? Seriously? Yes, she replied - the stained glass at Valtaiķi church are more impressive than here at Cologne. 

I was left with no options and decided to visit this church by my own. Unfortunately, as usual in Latvia, this church was closed and I hadn't any chance to see those stained glass in close, but by reading this church's history (see bellow) I did find that it's one of the best of it's kind in Latvia at least.

About Valtaiķi church

Valtaiķi church is 5 kilometres away from Kazdanga castle and even if nowadays territorially it is in Kuldīga County, it is very connected with Kazdanga. As soon as in 1792 a stone church was built, from the outside it was very simple and similar to other churches in Courland. The church of Valtaiķi is outstanding because of its beautiful and detailed stained glass, which were ordered from Italy by baron von Manteifelis in 20th century after sketches made by Vilhelms Purvītis. There are four stained glass windows around the altar, which tell a story about warrior’s three manners – bravery, godliness, compassion and charity. The other stained glass windows depict events from the New Testament. In the bottom part of the windows there are Manteifeļi and their wife emblem which depict the family’s history.

Restaurant 'Kūriņš' In Jūrmala, Latvia

Restaurant Kūriņš in Jūrmala serves a traditional Latvian cuisine. It's located close to the seashore in Kauguri (part of Jūrmala). Rumour has it - in weekends it's hard to get a table here. The reason probably is a great food, large portions and a lovely location.

Safco-Fish.GE First Fish Blog in Georgia

At the start of January 2015 I was contacted by a locally living foreigner, originally coming from South Africa doing some fish business in Republic of Georgia, after a brief conversation via e-mails we agreed to meet each other and I insisted I would love to see those fish ponds he is working for. Well I just like things like that. I once even visited a dairy farm here in Georgia and made some nice looking photos of cows.

Shortly we arranged a sightseeing tour. Read: South African Fish farms in Georgia and our friendship started. Soon afterwards we started to hang out, did some hiking tour. Read More: Hiking in Birtvisi. Johann (Production manager at these fish farms) guided me how to use DSRL camera as it turns out he is a photo geek. In brief - our friendship started.

I was asked could I help them out to I build a simple website for their company needs. I agreed and decided to use a minimum viable product approach in this case. So I took Drupal (I'm a Drupaller) and built a really minimal website with focus on High Quality Images (Remember manager both of fish farms and now the website is a photo geek - so it's not a problem to have a high quality photos). We agreed to build a simple website with a basic sections, like about us, contact us and to feature a blog on this website.

Safco is a company in Georgia that currently owns 50 ha of dams near Sagarejo. The company was formed by a number of South African investors who were interested in diversifying outside South Africa and found Georgia as an exciting oppurtunity.

Zur Morschbach Hotel Review in Altlay, Germany

I booked this hotel in Altlay because of it's close location to Frankfurt-Hahn airport, cheap price and free parking.  

I had like only 10 minutes for hotel research back in the Linden town. I was hoping to use hotwire for selecting a fine hotel near airport area, but unfortunately hotwire this time didn't served any hotel in a reasonable distance here. So my next move was booking.com. I didn't paid much attention of overall hotel interior as I already said - location, parking and cheap price was my main criteria. 

Zur Morschbach qualified for all my criteria. So we packed our belongings and headed here using our navi system. Didn't see anything much during our drive (it was night already)

When arrived at our hotel - I politely asked at reception, does they speak here any English. The guy was in a good mood and replied me in German - It's Germany you should speak German, and continued in perfect English. I asked could I can get some vase for a tulips back from Keukenhof's garden, and the person at reception desk quickly found a huge red bucket for our tulips. Sweet. Both us and a tulips needed just some rest and some fresh water.

Speaking of water, when tulips were covered I headed to search for drinking water or at least for some Coke on site and found a vending machine which sold carbonated water for EUR 2.00  a piece (no Coke here) After spending some EUR 10.00 on this vending machine on a mineral water I barely could stand still and headed to have a nice rest. Before that I took some photos of this place.

Just in the second morning we noticed a lovely view our hotel offers us. We had a chance to see this mist.

Blog Monthly Online Income Report - May 2015 - $373.59

Welcome to the 17th online income report. Today I will write about my online earnings and spendings in month of May 2015. I have been doing those report since January 2014 (Back then I earned enormous $8.37) and they help me track my online success or failures. I hope they can inspire you as well.

Speaking of previous month (May) earnings - in short last month has been the lowest since September 2014 (Although I was very pleased with my results in September, that was my second month of using Affiliate marketing and I was proud to report $287.25 in revenue).

There are a few reasons I find why my earnings felt sharply last month. In total my blog earned $433.59 what is a -41% decrease if compared to previous month (April) earnings.

As usual I like to compare how my online earnings stand to minimum and average wages in different countries. Turns our my earnings in May would equal to about a minimum wage in Latvia and would give me a pretty solid average salary in Georgia.

Blog traffic in May 2015

May was the record breaker and did set up a new personal record resulting in 20,843 unique users. What we can learn from that? Well, in this case nothing much. A lot of traffic not necessary means a lot of income. So for example in December 2014 I made 5 times more in online revenue with traffic just 13,000. I believe it's all about quality of traffic, seasonality and  lit bit of luck.

Now I have already starting to figure out how to break 1,000 users per day milestone. But I believe it should take some more time (some 4-6 months at least)

Income streams

For the past months I have reported that I have 3 streams (Amazon Associates, Google Adsense and Amazon CPM) but in fact I have another stream, a very passive income stream - Booking.com

So lets divide my 4 income streams into a two subgroups - Affiliate Marketing and Display ads:

Although Booking.com affiliates made me a flat 0, there is a reason I included this channel in my report. The thing is - Booking.com is the first affiliate marketing program I familiarized myself. It's about 3 years since I have been using it on different digital activities. About a year ago I was very eager on promoting hotels via Booking.com platform, but then I found that hotel affiliate industry is way too competitive and I decided to stop my activities on it and concentrate my forces on other channels. 

As summer season is approaching I noticed a few bookings made via my blog (I'm writing both hotel reviews where I have stayed and I'm listing best of kind hotels in cities I have visited) and for now there is a pretty fat commission waiting for me in June, July and August. I decided to continue using Booking.com affiliate marketing system just as a passive income stream. I will add more hotel reviews this summer, and lets see then at the end of this summer the results.

Speaking of a drop in Amazon Associates I believe the reason is the same - it's summer season and sales are down. Month of May reported me the lowest CTR rates so far staying a low as  % 1.85. I believe this trend will continue till the end of summer, but I hope for first good results already in this August. In August it will be one year I have been using Amazon Associates and last August was a pretty good in commissions (low, but good).

A year ago I made the 5th online income report. And back then I earned a very modest $6.01. Technically speaking if compared this May with previous May, I have earned 72 times more. That's an AWESOME growth, right?

Forecast/Goal for June

Right, although I like to make my forecasts very humble and I have already stated that I believe this summer season I won't crack a $1,000 milestone I will set up a goal for this month to reach $600. Anything bellow will be a bad result. That means just one, this month I will focus more on my affiliate marketing channels.

Restaurant 'Akropolis' In Linden, Germany

Welcome to my second restaurant review in Germany. First one happened some 90 km west from Linden. Read Restaurant Bellini In Andernach, Germany. 

Today I will write about a Greek style restaurant Akropolis in a lovely German city of Linden (Province of Hesse). The idea to visit this restaurant arise from our friend who had visited this place many times before.

Seems that owners have tried to cram restaurant with a lot of elements reminding Greece to give restaurant visitors they have arrived at Greece. Since I have never been to Greece (but would love to go there some day) - It's hard to judge. But I still have this feeling that it might be too overloaded with stuff.

Linden is a small German town located in historical region of Hesse. We headed here to enjoy dinner at Greek restaurant, make some purchases at local store and say goodbye to a friend with whom we travelled in Germany and headed to Keukenhof's garden in The Netherlands during our short trip in this part of the World.

Basically that's all I know about this German town in province of Hesse. Well they have a Greek restaurant here as well. There is a railway station in this town. And one of the largest computer hardware seller in Germany Alternate is located in Linden.

Cologne Cathedral - Germany's Most Visited Landmark

I have been into church photography lately and during our latest trip to Germany/ The Netherlands I had a chance to visit the Cathedral of Cologne. I was hoping to make here some good photos but unfortunately I'm not very satisfied with result I got it was a rainy day and I didn't use any tripod. There is still plenty of room to improve my photographer skills. But since I do find this object a pretty magnificent - I just couldn't resist to add it to my blog.

Cologne Cathedral (German: Kölner Dom)  is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Cologne, Germany. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and the administration of the Archdiocese of Cologne. It is a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and is a World Heritage Site.It is Germany's most visited landmark, attracting an average of 20,000 people a day.

Construction of Cologne Cathedral commenced in 1248 and was halted in 1473, leaving it unfinished. Work restarted in the 19th century and was completed, to the original plan, in 1880. It is 144.5 metres (474 ft) long, 86.25 m (283.0 ft) wide and its towers are approximately 157 m (515 ft) tall.

The cathedral is the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and has the second-tallest spires (after Ulm Minster.) Its two huge spires give it the largest façade of any church in the world. The choir has the largest height to width ratio, 3.6:1, of any medieval church.

Cologne's medieval builders had planned a grand structure to house the reliquary of the Three Kings and fit its role as a place of worship for the Holy Roman Emperor. Despite having been left incomplete during the medieval period, Cologne Cathedral eventually became unified as "a masterpiece of exceptional intrinsic value" and "a powerful testimony to the strength and persistence of Christian belief in medieval and modern Europe".

In 1996, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of culturally important sites. In 2004 it was placed on the "World Heritage in Danger" list, as the only Western site in danger, due to plans to construct a high-rise building nearby, which would have visually impacted the site. The cathedral was removed from the List of In Danger Sites in 2006, following the authorities' decision to limit the heights of buildings constructed near and around the cathedral.

As a World Heritage Site, and with its convenient position on tourist routes, Cologne Cathedral is a major tourist attraction, the visitors including many who travel there as a Christian pilgrimage.

As I already stated in my previous blog post about Gothic Aachen Town Hall (Rathaus) in Germany this was my first time in Aachen and I had little not to say no clue what to see here. After a lovely breakfast at Oebel Backerei we decided to spend a few more minutes in this German town of Aachen. Then we discovered Aachen's Town hall and then shortly we found this magnificent Cathedral.

Unfortunetly during our visit here, the church were closed because of church service was held. Anyway I decided to take a few images here, and you can see the result bellow:

About Aachen Cathedral

Aachen Cathedral, frequently referred to as the "Imperial Cathedral" (in German: Kaiserdom), is a Roman Catholic church in Aachen, Germany. The church is the oldest cathedral in northern Europe and was known as the "Royal Church of St. Mary at Aachen" during the Middle Ages. For 595 years, from 936 to 1531, the Aachen chapel was the church of coronation for 30 German kings and 12 queens. The church is the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Aachen.

Charles the Great (Charlemagne) began the construction of the Palatine Chapel around 796, along with the building of the rest of the palace structures.The construction is credited to Odo of Metz. It suffered a large amount of damage around 881, by the Northmen and was restored in 983. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Gothic additions were added, including the choir in 1355. It was restored again in 1881. The core of the cathedral is the Carolingian Palatine Chapel, which is notably small in comparison to the later additions. In order to sustain the enormous flow of pilgrims in the Gothic period a choir hall was built: a two-part Capella vitrea (glass chapel) which was consecrated on the 600th anniversary of Charlemagne's death. A cupola, several other chapels and a steeple were also constructed at later dates.

In 1978, it was one of the first 12 items to make the entry into the UNESCO list of world heritage sites, as the first German and one of the first three European historical ensembles. The cathedral uses two distinct architectural styles. First, the Palatine Chapel of Charlemagne, modeled after San Vitale at Ravenna and considered to be Carolingian-Romanesque. Secondly, the choir in the Gothic style.

The organ system of Aachen Cathedral was installed in 1939. It consists in part of the earlier organ, installed 1845-1847, which was built by the organ builder Wilhelm Korfmacher of Linnich. This Korfmacher organ had 60 stops, distributed in three works.

After a lovely breakfast at Oebel Backerei we decided to spend a few more minutes in this German town of Aachen. Since this was my first time at this part of Germany, and frankly speaking this was my first time of hearing the name of Aachen I had no idea what I should see in this city. We just started to walk on one of the narrow streets and found this Gothic Town Hall.

Don't get me wrong - with all my respect to ancient German rulers this guy looks like Darth Vader from Star Wars travelled back to some 16th century town of Aachen. No offence!

About Aachen's Town Hall (Rathaus)

The Gothic Aachen Rathaus, or "Aachen City Hall", lies next to the Aachen Cathedral and is one of the most striking structures in the Altstadt of Aachen, Germany.

In the first half of the 14th century, Aachen’s citizenry built the City Hall under the leadership of its acting mayor Gerhard Chorus (1285–1367) as a sign of their civic freedom, though they did have to promise to establish a space in the new City Hall that could host the traditional meal that accompanies new coronations. Up to then, the nearby mid-13th century Grashaus (which is one of the city’s oldest still-standing structures) had served the community in that function. Construction began in 1330 on top of the foundations walls of the Aula Regia, part of the derelict Palace of Aachen, built during the Carolingian dynasty. Dating from the time of Charlemagne, the Granus Tower was incorporated into the structure as well. Additionally, masonry from that era was incorporated into the south side of the building as well. The structure was completed in 1349, and while the City Hall served as the administrative center of the city, part of the city’s munitions and weaponry was housed in the Granus Tower, which also served for some time as a prison.

Aachen’s City Hall survived World War I without sustaining damage, but during civil unrest that arose in the course of a separatists’ movement whose goal was the creation of an independent Rhenish Republic, City Hall was stormed by a group of separatists who caused serious damage both to its interior and exterior. Parts of the façade, such as adorning statues and both clocks, were broken, as were all window panes on the first floor on the Market side. Additionally, several rooms inside the building were ransacked, and many of the famed frescoes within were heavily damaged by gunfire. The furniture (especially that within the mayoral office and Coronation Hall) were damaged as they were used as projectiles.In the Emperor Hall, an undetonated bomb was discovered.

During World War II, Aachen City Hall was heavily damaged by bombing raids, especially those occurring on 14 July 1943 and 11 April 1944. On 14 July 1943 the roof of the building and both towers burned, and afterwards the structure retained a distinctive shape due to the heat that twisted the steel skeletons inside the tower caps. The Coronation Hall was again heavily damaged and the north facing wall was moved in places up to 30 centimeters vertically. The imminent threat of collapse was staved off through the use of emergency beams that held the structure in place. Because of rain penetrating the interior of the building, its frescoes were severely affected, and five of the eight were carefully removed by Franz Stiewi and stored at the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum. 

The architect Professor Otto Gruber and the building engineer Professor Richard Stumpf prepared a report in 1945 about the structural integrity of the building. With the help of Professor Josef Pirlet, the dilapidated north façade was reinforced with steel and tension bars, and in 1946, the building’s roof was repaired using makeshift sheets of zinc. After structural analysis was conducted and the foreground was reinforced, the replacement of the north façade had to take place, since almost all of the arches there were broken. The arches on the ground floor were again closed for repairs in 1950, and the reconstruction of the Emperor Hall was largely completed by 1953, with the configuration of the room following in the next few years. The question of how the tower caps should be rebuilt remained at the heart of a controversial discussion. In 1966 Professor Wilhelm K. Fischer, who had worked extensively in the reconstruction of Aachen, produced a sketch for the towers’ design, as students from RWTH Aachen University also took part in the debate, submitted 24 designs for consideration. In 1968 eight additional expert designs were submitted to a working group whose task it was to rebuild the towers, and after discussing several modern looks, the group settled on a design by the conservation-restoration expert Leo Hugot, who stuck tightly to the historical image of the towers. The tower caps were finally finished in 1978.
