Performing Joomla 1.5 convert to Drupal 7

| Drupal Development | 7 seen

Over past couple of years, I have many times seen a bad Joomla site, which either is hacked or is not working as it should, and I have converted those sites to Drupal.

The most strange things is, there is always some Joomla developer, who has created that site, but when problems occur, that Joomla developer is gone.. Strange right? How can one call himself a Joomla developer, when first problems occur, he is gone?

So I got another Joomla site request to perform a Joomla major Upgrade from 1.5 to 2.5.

I thought, hell, why not - let's fix this site, by not converting it to Drupal (As I usually do), but let's stay on Joomla.

Site works, there has been no hackers yet. So I started to do Joomla upgrade. At first I made a minor upgrade, to update Joomla database to latest stable. I was reading a lot Joomla developer forums and blogs, what are they suggestions. In order to perform major upgrade for Joomla, you have to install some mystic upgrade extension... Ok, I did, I followed to all the best practices from Joomla community for upgrading Joomla site... And then.. It sucks.

There is no native way to upgrade multilingual support in Joomla. I spent 2 days figuring out, how the hell get that site back working with multilingual, and no progress.

Joomla is using some really fishy plugin for i18n, called joomfish... Name says everything - it's some fishy plugin...

So screw you Joomla - I set up a new Drupal site, added a Joomla migration module, to import all Joomla articles to site, recreated menus, re-themed theme in less than 6 hours in Drupal.

Some might say - that's because I'm working with Drupal on my everyday basis, that's right. But for me it seems strange - it's easier to perform Joomla to Drupal convert, than perform Joomla - Joomla upgrade.

No more Joomla for me, anymore (well for q few years at least)

If you are looking to perform Joomla to Drupal convert, please drop a comment or contact me.

6 month of blogging each day has passed

| Blogging | 5 seen

I started this blog on October 4th, 2013, and I started my blogging experience with a promise to blog 365 days in a row (including Christmas, New Years day and other)

I'm half way there. So I decided to give some insights how I'm performing for now.

My blog traffic stats has raised from very modest to decent modest, in January I even experienced my first traffic spike, when someone posted link to my blog, on highly popular site.

I'm experiencing traffic gains step by step, last month (March)  I got 542 unique visitors which of course is pretty modest number. My plan by end of September is to get stable 6000 unique visitors per month. Pretty much to grow, right? I must increase my traffic by some 12 times.

Top 10 articles

[view:referenced_items=block_1]

As you can see, some economical articles are more popular over other types of articles. I like economics and statistics, so for now, it seems, pretty ok.

My AdSense earnings for my blog is really modest, it might me some $3 over last 6 months. So I decided to work with my sites layout, to get higher CTR.

What's next?

In following next 6 month's I must achieve 6000 visitors a month, break even my hosting expenses, by receiving from AdSense $40/month. Right now I'm publishing just one article each day, I guess for this and next month I will increase my writing rate, posting about 60 articles in a month.

My online income report - March 2014

| Blogging | 8 seen

My online income in March dropped by half, and totalled to really modest $5.51.

In average I earned about $0.177 a day, what is significant drop compared to previous month, when in daily average I earned $0.34

  • Highest earnings per day: $1.06
  • Days making more than $1: 1
  • Days without making earnings: 7
Main reason for drop in earnings is simple, I lost traffic for one of my top performer sites. On the other hand, in March I launched 3 new properties with Google Adsense. My blog seems now attracts the most visitors, but CTR is pretty low. So I'm planing to make few tests with ads placement on my blog, to see if it helps me get back my earnings to previous level.

Blog statistics March 2014

| Blogging | 7 seen

March was pretty good month in terms of visitors from search engines. My blog managed to attract more than 500 visitors this month.

500 is pretty modest result, but still it's growing number, compared to little more than 300 in previous month.

This month I'm aiming between 750-1000 unique visitors. I believe I will manage this, thanks to organic search results.

My aim is to get about 6000 uniques by end of this September/October.

Living in Georgia already 3 years

| Living in Georgia | 5 seen

Today it has been already three years, since I have been living in Georgia. My first arrival to Tbilisi was at night from April 1st to April 2nd.

I knew little, not to say, nothing about Georgia, before then. I knew that Georgia once was part of the USSR, I have heard something about war in 2008. I feel much more educated about Georgia now!

The reason I decided to come to Georgia, was an article on Forbes, covering Georgia, and saying that Georgia is fast reformer and it has one of best business environments in the World. (Yes, I was a bit naive back then)

The driven force was economic changes in Georgia. So I decided to see them, and so I have been living here for already 3 years. Nice, right?

I have been living in Tbilisi, with 6 month period living at the Black sea resort town of Batumi (2012).

What can I tell about Georgia 3 years latter?

My feeling are ambivalent, there are so many things I like, and there are few things which I would like to be different.

In overall Georgia is small nation with small nation complex and prides. Georgians are warm welcoming, but they are always wondering why I have choosed Georgia, why not some Germany, Spain or Greece. It seems Georgians somehow doesn't believe in their country. It might be related to the harsh history of Georgia.

I don't want tell anything negative about Georgia. I will tell only positive.

  • Georgia is very attractive and nature rich country.
  • People are friendly, and somehow naive.
  • Food is amazing.
  • Prices are cheap.
  • As a foreigner it's much easier to do business with Georgians if you speak Russian
  • English language skills are pretty high in Government department and large companies
  • I have never been any serious issues without not knowing Georgian language
My most loved attractions, I guess are Turtle lake in Tbilisi, Batumi city, Gudauri, Bakuriani.   Will see what next year will bring me on :)

Educating North Korea (2014) - Unlocking the Secrets of Elite University: A Panorama Documentary

    | Documentaries | 11 seen

The documentary "Educating North Korea" from British BBC Panorama sheds light on one of the world's most closed and oppressive societies.

North Korea is ruled by the young and ruthless leader Kim Jong-un, who has threatened nuclear war against the United States and recently executed his own uncle. In the heart of this absolute dictatorship, there is a remarkable university that is attempting to change the minds of the nation's future elite.

The university, which is paid for by the West, offers a unique opportunity for students to learn from foreign lecturers and gain exposure to new ideas.

The university is located in the heart of North Korea and is unlike any other academic institution in the world. It is designed to educate the future leaders of the country and is exclusively for the sons of some of the most powerful men in the nation. The aim of the university is to give these young men a chance to broaden their horizons and see the world from a different perspective. The university is a rare window into North Korea, offering a glimpse into a world that is otherwise off-limits to outsiders.

Reporter Chris Rogers gained unprecedented access to the university and lived with the students on campus. He observed the daily life of the students and talked to them about their experiences. The students were eager to learn and showed great curiosity about the world outside of North Korea. Despite the strict control that the regime has over the country, the students were able to form their own opinions and express them freely.

During his time at the university, Rogers asked the students about their thoughts on the future of North Korea and whether they believed that the country could one day be a part of the international community. The students were divided in their opinions, with some expressing a desire for change and others feeling that the country should remain isolated from the rest of the world.

One student named Kim, who is the son of a high-ranking official, expressed his hope for a brighter future for North Korea. Kim was passionate about the idea of improving the lives of the North Korean people and believed that the country could one day become a part of the international community. He saw the university as a stepping stone towards that goal and was eager to learn as much as he could from the foreign lecturers.

Another student named Lee, who is the son of a military official, was less optimistic about the future of the country. Lee believed that the country should remain isolated and that the only way to protect its citizens was to keep them isolated from the rest of the world. He saw the university as a necessary step in maintaining the regime's control over the country, but did not believe that it would lead to any significant changes.

Despite their differing opinions, the students were all eager to learn and were interested in the world outside of North Korea. They were exposed to new ideas and perspectives that they had never encountered before. The university is a unique opportunity for these young men to broaden their horizons and gain a new perspective on the world.

The university is just one aspect of the complex and secretive world of North Korea. Despite the strict control that the regime has over the country, there are signs of change and the possibility of a brighter future. The students at the university are the next generation of leaders in North Korea and they will play a critical role in determining the future of the country.

In conclusion, the documentary "Educating North Korea" offers a rare glimpse into one of the world's most secretive and oppressive societies. It provides a window into the minds of the future leaders of North Korea and raises important questions about the future of the country. The students at the university are the next generation of leaders and they will play a critical role in determining the future of North Korea.

Behind China's Economic Boom: How China Fooled the World (2014) Documentary Reveals the Secrets

    | Documentaries | 6 seen

"How China Fooled the World" is a documentary film produced by Martin Durkin and broadcasted on Channel 4 in the UK in 2014. The film explores the impact of China's rapid economic growth on the global economy and argues that China's success story is not what it seems.

The documentary opens by highlighting the impressive growth rates of the Chinese economy, which have outpaced those of the West over the past few decades. It then goes on to question the sustainability of this growth, pointing out that much of it has been fueled by cheap credit, government subsidies, and exports to the West. The film suggests that China has been able to maintain its growth by manipulating its currency, suppressing wages, and flouting international trade rules.

One of the main arguments of the film is that China has built up massive overcapacity in its industries, particularly in steel and other heavy industries. This overcapacity has driven down prices and hurt producers in other countries, leading to accusations of unfair competition. The film argues that the Chinese government has been slow to address this problem, instead relying on more credit-fueled growth to keep the economy going.

Another focus of the documentary is the role of corruption in the Chinese economy. The film argues that corruption is endemic in China, and that it has helped to fuel the country's rapid growth. The documentary features interviews with Chinese businessmen and officials who describe how bribery and kickbacks are commonplace in the country. The film suggests that this corruption is a major obstacle to further economic reform in China.

Overall, "How China Fooled the World" is a thought-provoking and provocative look at the Chinese economy and its impact on the world. While some of the film's arguments may be controversial, it raises important questions about the sustainability of China's growth and the role of the government in the country's economy. Whether or not one agrees with the film's conclusions, it is a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate about China's place in the global economy.
