Performing Joomla 1.5 convert to Drupal 7

Over past couple of years, I have many times seen a bad Joomla site, which either is hacked or is not working as it should, and I have converted those sites to Drupal.

The most strange things is, there is always some Joomla developer, who has created that site, but when problems occur, that Joomla developer is gone.. Strange right? How can one call himself a Joomla developer, when first problems occur, he is gone?

So I got another Joomla site request to perform a Joomla major Upgrade from 1.5 to 2.5. 

I thought, hell, why not - let's fix this site, by not converting it to Drupal (As I usually do), but let's stay on Joomla.

Site works, there has been no hackers yet. So I started to do Joomla upgrade. At first I made a minor upgrade, to update Joomla database to latest stable. I was reading a lot Joomla developer forums and blogs, what are they suggestions. In order to perform major upgrade for Joomla, you have to install some mystic upgrade extension... Ok, I did, I followed to all the best practices from Joomla community for upgrading Joomla site... And then.. It sucks.

There is no native way to upgrade multilingual support in Joomla. I spent 2 days figuring out, how the hell get that site back working with multilingual, and no progress. 

Joomla is using some really fishy plugin for i18n, called joomfish... Name says everything - it's some fishy plugin...

So screw you Joomla - I set up a new Drupal site, added a Joomla migration module, to import all Joomla articles to site, recreated menus, re-themed theme in less than 6 hours in Drupal.

Some might say - that's because I'm working with Drupal on my everyday basis, that's right. But for me it seems strange - it's easier to perform Joomla to Drupal convert, than perform Joomla - Joomla upgrade.

No more Joomla for me, anymore (well for q few years at least)

I started this blog on October 4th, 2013, and I started my blogging experience with a promise to blog 365 days in a row (including Christmas, New Years day and other)

I'm half way there. So I decided to give some insights how I'm performing for now.

My blog traffic stats has raised from very modest to decent modest, in January I even experienced my first traffic spike, when someone posted link to my blog, on highly popular site.

I'm experiencing traffic gains step by step, last month (March)  I got 542 unique visitors which of course is pretty modest number. My plan by end of September is to get stable 6000 unique visitors per month. Pretty much to grow, right? I must increase my traffic by some 12 times.

As you can see, some economical articles are more popular over other types of articles. I like economics and statistics, so for now, it seems, pretty ok. 

My AdSense earnings for my blog is really modest, it might me some $3 over last 6 months. So I decided to work with my sites layout, to get higher CTR.

What's next?

In following next 6 month's I must achieve 6000 visitors a month, break even my hosting expenses, by receiving from AdSense $40/month. Right now I'm publishing just one article each day, I guess for this and next month I will increase my writing rate, posting about 60 articles in a month.

My online income in March dropped by half, and totalled to really modest $5.51.

In average I earned about $0.177 a day, what is significant drop compared to previous month, when in daily average I earned $0.34

March was pretty good month in terms of visitors from search engines. My blog managed to attract more than 500 visitors this month.

500 is pretty modest result, but still it's growing number, compared to little more than 300 in previous month.

This month I'm aiming between 750-1000 unique visitors. I believe I will manage this, thanks to organic search results.

My aim is to get about 6000 uniques by end of this September/October. 

Living in Georgia already 3 years

Today it has been already three years, since I have been living in Georgia. My first arrival to Tbilisi was at night from April 1st to April 2nd. 

I knew little, not to say, nothing about Georgia, before then. I knew that Georgia once was part of the USSR, I have heard something about war in 2008. I feel much more educated about Georgia now!

The reason I decided to come to Georgia, was an article on Forbes, covering Georgia, and saying that Georgia is fast reformer and it has one of best business environments in the World. (Yes, I was a bit naive back then)

The driven force was economic changes in Georgia. So I decided to see them, and so I have been living here for already 3 years. Nice, right?

I have been living in Tbilisi, with 6 month period living at the Black sea resort town of Batumi (2012).

What can I tell about Georgia 3 years latter?

My feeling are ambivalent, there are so many things I like, and there are few things which I would like to be different.

In overall Georgia is small nation with small nation complex and prides. Georgians are warm welcoming, but they are always wondering why I have choosed Georgia, why not some Germany, Spain or Greece. It seems Georgians somehow doesn't believe in their country. It might be related to the harsh history of Georgia.

I don't want tell anything negative about Georgia. I will tell only positive.

• Georgia is very attractive and nature rich country. 
• People are friendly, and somehow naive.
• Food is amazing.
• Prices are cheap.
• As a foreigner it's much easier to do business with Georgians if you speak Russian
• English language skills are pretty high in Government department and large companies
• I have never been any serious issues without not knowing Georgian language
