Blog Online Income Report - January 2015 - $701.80

| Blogging | 8 seen

Welcome to my blog's thirteen online income report, this time covering earnings I have made solely with my blog in month of January 2015.

Those reports keeps me track were I'm, were I was and were I'm heading to. I hope they can inspire some as well.

About Online Income in January 2015

In total my blog helped me to earn additional $752.65, what is a decrease of -62.95% if compared to previous month, when we (blog and me) earned pretty serious $2,029.67

$752.65 in a month equals to $24.27 in a day

Technically speaking, my January's earnings would be about the same as minimum wage in Portugal.

About Blog Traffic in January

I guess it would be just fair to share some data how much visitors my blog is attracting in these income reports, right? Well, Actually, I have a separate blog category for such kind of reports - 'Blog Statistics' - but to keep it simple, I will give you some overview of January traffic:

Speaking of January traffic - in short - it was an awesome month, in total my blog attracted 19,798 users, I didn't managed to crack 20,000 milestone, but I do not feel sad about that at all.

About income streams

In January earned from

Amazon Associates

Amazon CPM

Google Adsense

I will not dig in details how much exactly each income stream brought me in - I will just stick with following info - Amazon Associates alone brings me in more than 90% of total income.

About expenses

I believe this is another issue which should be included in every online income report - actual expenses. I have been doing those reports for already 1 year, and I have never included expenses section into them. Well, probably because I thought they are not playing any major role, because they are small enough (yet).

Anyway - I did have some expenses during January

Linode VPS - $40.00

Linode VPS 2 - $10.85

Total expenses: $50.85

I bought another Linode VPS for making few Drupal development tests

Were I was a year ago

Since this is already thirteen online income report - it means only one - I'm trying to monetize my blog already for one year, and here is how much I earned a year ago:

Here is my online income report for January (2014).

Google Adsense - $8.37

Booking affiliate - 0

Total - $8.37

By average in January I earned $0.27 per day. What makes me to be below extreme poverty if compared to World's poorest countries.

I'm pretty satisfied with this year on year growth.

About Online Income Report Round Up posts

I must admit I'm reading how other bloggers are performing and how much they are earning with their blogs, probably many of those bloggers i have discovered thanks to round up posts of online income reports. I must admit - reading others success or failures has given me faith to continue improving my results.

This January, my humble blog has been included in following blog round up posts:

Einbruch im Dezember?! – Traffic & Einnahmen von 22 englischsprachigen Blogs

Inspiration: 99 blogs and startups with transparent income reports

Honestly speaking, ofcourse it's cool to be noticed and showcased on other blogs as an example or inspiration (hopefully)

Goals/Forecast for February

This is a tricky part - to make any forecasts or goals. I will predict around $600 for February. Because of - there are less days in February, and I'm affraid of a traffic drop this month.

Blog Traffic Report - January 2015 - 19,798 Users

| Blogging | 10 seen

Welcome to already 16 my blog's statistics and traffic report, this time covering month of January, 2015. 16 months ago I started a journey called blogging.

I have done those reports from first month I started to blog, to measure were I was, were I am and were I am heading too. Those reports keep me track my progress (or bounces), and hopefully can inspire some other bloger(s) as well.

Speaking of January traffic - in short - it was an awesome month, in total my blog attracted 19,798 users, I didn't managed to crack 20,000 milestone, but I do not feel sad about that at all.

Blog Traffic January 2015

19,798 users is a 51,43% growth if compared to previous month.

It's a 6724 users gain if compared to previous month.

19,798 users in a month equals to 638.64 users in a day, again, it's up from 421.74 users in a day from last month

Following words I said last month (when foretasted traffic results for January):

Speaking of forecast for January - I will keep my forecast modest - 10,000 unique visitors or a little bit less (I'm afraid of traffic drop)

Well, first of all, I almost reached 20,000 users milestone this month, so my forecast was a false. Second, speaking of a traffic drop (I'm afraid of them every single day and night), this time instead of a traffic drop, I got a traffic spike, which actually was second spike during my blogging career.

Where I was a year ago

My blog is about 16 month old, and I have been doing monthly traffic reports from first month starting. So it's easy to compare were I was a year ago.

Blog Traffic Report: January 2015 vs January 2014

A year ago, after 4 month of blogging I first time managed to crack 1,000 user milestone (which was done thanks to traffic spike from Reddit). Now - a year after, I have almost reached 20,000 users milestone. Pretty impressive growth in a one year, right?

Road to 100,000 unique visitors in a month

Starting last summer, I have been measuring my success (or failures)  to reach 100,000 unique visitors in a month. Since there is nothing much I can analyse (just actual traffic results) - at end of the January 2015 - I stand at 19,78% level of eventual 100,000 unique visitors. I doubt I will reach 100 K any time soon, but it's good to know were you stand right now.

What I have done in month of January

There is no magic or formula - it's just a blog writing and up keeping (maybe a little bit following global trends). In short I have been consecutive bloging each day, starting October 2013 (missing just 2 days in May 2014). Another formula I'm trying to stick with - to write a minimum 500 words article each day.

In days I have no good internet access I'm posting from my phone. I'm trying to stay focused to not to miss a single day of blog post each and every day. That simple.

To keep up with growing numbers, last month I increased my blogging ratio to 2 articles per day, from mid January. I'm actually planning to keep with this strategy for coming months as well.

Traffic sources

After a longer period overall Google traffic decreased to 57% (from more than 80%), thanks to a 'viral' post on Facebook.

Organic search: 57.98%

Social: 26.46%

Direct: 13.15%

Referral: 1.83%

(Other): 0.58%

In conclusion

Last month (January 2015) was a best month so far in terms of unique visitors. I almost cracked 20,000 unique visitors milestone.

Speaking of forecast for February - I will keep my forecast modest - 14,000 unique visitors or a little bit less (I'm afraid of traffic drop, and there are only 28 days this month)

My Savings Report January 2015 - GEL Loses It's Value Against USD For 14% Since September

| Living in Georgia | 13 seen

A time ago, in September 2014, I started to save some money, I was so eager to save money, that I even started a new category on my blog - 'Savings Reports'.

4 months from my first, and yet latest, Savings report have passed, back then in September I deposited a small amount of sum of 300 GEL, which back then equaled to $169.68 or EUR 131.81.

By today's exchange rates 300 GEL would equal to $145.27 or EUR 128.75, which basically means following, since the end of September Georgian national currency Lari (GEL) has lost it's value to USD for -14.38%, and - 2.32% to Euro.

Investors don't like to lose money, right?

I didn't paid much attention to Lari fluctuations until now, when I found that I have lost around 14% of my money if exchanged to USD.

Unfortunately I'm not wise enough (just a regular dude) to tell you what happened to Lari exactly and why it's loosing it's value both to USD and EUR, probably you have heard that USD is getting stronger to almost every other currency. Wise economist call it a  - dollar was not assessed, and now it's being assessed (probably they use some other term for that).

Well it could be one of the reasons, I agree.

Second reason might be related to Rubles crisis in Russia, again, probably you already have heard that Russian ruble has lost it's value to dollar for about 40% already. I will re-publish some quotes from article Money Troubles: Russia's Weak Ruble Pulls Down Neighbors' Currencies from RFE/RL

As the value of Russia's ruble tumbles amid low oil global prices and Western sanctions, it is taking the currencies of many former Soviet republics down with it.

...

The same thing is happening next door in Georgia. Moscow may not be Tbilisi's major trading partner, as it is Yerevan's, but Russia is the single biggest source of remittances from Georgians working abroad. Now, however, the rubles they send home inject far less money into the economy than before.

...

The drop in the Armenian and Georgian currencies create an array of problems for both countries. It means each has to pay more for badly needed imports from the West and pay more to service their foreign debt. At the same time, they must spend some of their scarce foreign currency reserves to slow the rate at which their currencies lose value if the public is to maintain faith in the nation's money.

I believe the truth is somewhere in between.

Anyway back to my savings report - during those few last month I have accumulated more than just 300 GEL, I have deposited in average 300 GEL each month (in November I deposited 350 GEL) in ProCredit's bank savings plan, which offered 6% annual interest rate until December 2014, and decreased it's annual rate to 5% starting January 2015.

Speaking of decrease of interest rate to 5% - I was quite naive and believed that it's a good sign, and banks are looking to stabilize Lari (which I believe they are doing), but if comparing GEL/USD exchange rates in December 2014 and January 2015 it doesn't look so.

Date Deposited GEL Interest GEL Monthly rate % USD Buy USD SELL EUR Buy EUR SELL 29.09.2014 300   0.50% 1.738 1.768 2.215 2.276 31.10.2014 300 1.58 0.50% 1.739 1.769 2.167 2.28 28.11.2014 300 3.07 0.50% 1.817 1.857 2.264 2.325 29.12.2014 350 4.73 0.50% 1.84 1.89 2.23 2.31 30.01.2014 300 5.39 0.42% 1.965 2.065 2.232 2.33 Total GEL 1550 14.77           Total Savings GEL 1564.77

Since the end of September I have saved 1550 GEL and got 14.47 Lari in interest

Though taking into account that eventually I have lost 14% if converted to USD I made spontaneous and probably irrational decision to split my savings into 3 currencies.

I exchanged my money to USD and EUR and again deposited them into 3 savings plans, with following interest rates (annual) - GEL 5%, USD 2.5%, EUR 2%

Currency Deposited Annual % Monthly % Interest   GEL 685.17 5 0.42 2.87 GEL   USD 200 2.5 0.208 0.416 USD   EUR 200 2 0.166 0.332 EUR               Total Value GEL  1524.57         Total Value USD 753.8         Total Value EUR 667.22

As you can see - my spontaneous decision cost me 40.27 Lari if I would convert my money back to Lari. What I'm not doing any time soon.

I made this decision just to make more confidence that I will at be least somehow covered if in one day I will find that my savings has lost around 50% of it's value, and bread in the market cost 3 times more. In case of that I needed to do this currency exchange. Just for my confidence.

In conclusion

Though having interest rates applied to your money is fun and probably a cool way to increase your money, I personally don't think so (well I find it cool, to see increase in savings each month). I prefer to deposit some larger amount of money each month in order to save for the rainy day, and having a small interest applied to it is just a small bonus. I believe that for investments to have a money in you bank account is the same as to have your money under your pillow - money should be invested somewhere in order to earn, there are plenty of investment opportunities, starting stocks, bonds, mutual funds and other.

Since the amount I have saved in last couple of months are rather modest - I'm not looking to invest it right now in some stocks or bonds - I'm looking to increase my savings amount to more decent sum before investing it somewhere else. Still, I'm looking for ways not to loose my money.

I will keep you updated how I'm performing in upcoming Savings Report series.

P.S. This is not first time I'm covering Lari troubles against dollar, here are some other articles:

  • GEL continues to be weak against USD
  • GEL continues to be weak against USD - is it time to start get worried?

Hiking Trails in Tbilisi - Turtle Lake (Kus Tba) - Tskneti

| Outdoor Activities | 231 seen

I believe one of my most favourite places in Tbilisi is a Turtle Lake (Kus Tba). I have been heading here pretty often, actually just a few weeks ago we did a shorter hiking route heading from Turtle lake to Vake Park. There are pretty many hiking trails around Turtle lake - if you are found of eco-tourism or just like me (us) are looking to wind your head from noisy city sounds - these hikes will do it best!

Today we made a spontaneous route from Turtle lake to Tskenti. At start of this trip I had no idea we will actually end our route there, but as I said - it was a spontaneous route. In time of what we discovered first messengers of Spring - different mountain flowers (snowdrops, for example), had a delicious picnic, seen a rabbit and hound dogs hunting for him, and many other)

Turtle Lake - Tskneti trail map

I forgot to charge my phone so I cannot give you precise route, but according to Google Maps - this route is 7.0 km long and it's to possible to finish it in 1 K 46 min. For us it took around 4 hours and felt like 20 km, but we had three breaks for in-taking our meal, enjoying a coffee or just relaxing with beautiful views.

I managed to capture 41 picture from this route, and proudly am sharing them to you!

How Amazon Associates Receives Their Checks in Republic of Georgia - Part 2

| Living in Georgia | 43 seen

Welcome to the 2 part of my blog series on how Amazon Associates receives checks and gets them redeemed in the Republic of Georgia.

How participants of the Amazon Associates program are getting paid in the Republic of Georgia by a bank check is a blog series I originally made at the end of 2014 / start of 2015 while struggling to redeem my first bank check issued by Amazon,

Although it's still technically possible to withdraw bank checks in Georgia, at the end of 2016, I flew to the US and opened a bank account there, see: How To Open A Bank Account in the U.S., As A Non-resident Non-citizen, Wells Fargo Bank

For complete series of my adventures while living in Georgia with Georgian banks and checks from Amazon, please see:

  • How Amazon Affiliates get paid in the Republic of Georgia - Part 1
  • How Amazon Associates Receive Their Checks in the Republic of Georgia - Part 2
  • How Amazon Associates Receive Their Checks in the Republic of Georgia - Part 3 - Waiting 40 Working Days
  • How Amazon Associates Receive Their Checks in the Republic of Georgia - Part 4 - Bank Commission Fees

I created the first post of this series at the start of November 2014. Back then my earnings for August, September, and October has reached $486.00 and I was looking for ways to get paid.

Prior to that, I did set up a minimum threshold of $450.00 on Amazon Associates before processing the payment - because I'm aware of bank commission fees.

Direct deposit is not an option right now for me, because I'm not a holder of a US bank account, and neither I'm a US citizen. I'm left with two options - gift card or check.

The first check from Amazon was issued at the end of December (December 27, 2014) - I received it via snail mail here in Georgia on January 28, but before I got an envelope with a check inside it, I got a sticker on my apartment building's entrance door from Georgian Post.

Sticker from Georgian Post

I was lucky enough to notice this little sticker with my name on it. In case you are wondering, in Georgia it's not common to have a postal box.. why should you have one, if a postman can stick a sticker with your name on it on the entrance doors of your apartment building?

Since I have no clue, what is written on it - and what should I do now - I contacted a friend of mine living in Germany who can read Georgian, and with help of his transliteration, I learned I must go to Tsereteli Avenue 95.

On the second day, I went to the Georgian Post branch on Tsereteli avenue and got my mail:

Mail from Amazon

Georgian Post Stamp

It turned out mail arrived in Georgia, already on January 23, though I received a sticker with the invitation to visit the post office just on January 28. 5 days  - who cares about 5 days?

Amazon Check

And here it was - my first check from Amazon Associates, worth Four Hundred Eighty-Three Dollars And Sixty-Three Cents.

I straight went to my bank, but turned out - my bank turned me down, by saying it was not possible to clear that check... I went to the central branch of my Bank - they turned me down again. I went to another bank, they turned me down as well. Luckily I found a bank - which hadn't any issues redeeming a check sent by Amazon - Bank Republic. You can learn more, about how banks turned me down, and how I found that the Bank Republic is a great option in this post.

Right now I'm waiting for those dollars to land in my bank account.

Do you have a story to share on receiving and clearing Amazon checks abroad? Please leave your comment!

'Bank Republic' Georgia Offers Check Redemption

| Living in Georgia | 19 seen

Some time ago I made a post about how Amazon Associates are getting paid in the Republic of Georgia, I was wise enough to call that article "Part 1" because I knew there will be a long and probably complicated procedure of  "cashing" a check sent by Amazon Associates here in Georgia.

Again, some time ago I wrote a post about how to open a banking account in the Republic of Georgia for foreigners, in that post I suggested sticking with ProCredit bank.

Update: TBC bank took over the Bank Republic a few years ago. I currently do not hold an account with the Bank Republic or TBC. For the time I was using Bank Republic - one of the best banking experiences here in Georgia.

If you need consultancy or help with opening a bank account in Georgia, visit the Terramatris website: Opening Bank Account in Georgia

Recently I finally received my first Amazon Associates check, so I went straight to my bank - ProCredit bank.

Unfortunately clerks there had no idea what to do with a check, I got really interested, and pardon me strange answers - like the minimum checksum must be no less, than $1,000, I cannot redeem a check because I'm a natural person and finally "best of all answers"  - I cannot redeem a check in Georgia at all. I asked - can my beloved bank suggest to me what should I do then - and got an answer - they do not care, it's not their problem. I can agree this is not their problem, but it would be polite to give me at least some suggestions on what to do, right?

I will wrap up another post, about how I dealt with a few banks that day, but for ease of this article I will stick with its topic - there is one bank, where I believe it's possible to redeem a check - and it's Bank Republic I'm talking about.

And here is my story in brief

I just went into one of the Bank Republic branches on Marjanashvilli, Tbilisi (right next to ProCredit bank) - showed my check to a bank employee - and got a victorious answer - sure, it's not a problem to redeem your check buddy, in a matter of 14 days you will receive your funds. And our conversation started.

I was told that I can have a free check account at the Bank Republic for redeeming my checks, but I would need to pay then some additional money for actually withdrawing any money from that checking account, I was offered to open a bank account for 37 Lari, which includes Visa Classic card, internet banking, 3 multi-currency accounts (GEL/EUR and USD). I agreed to open a 37 Lari account.

It took some 1 hour to do all paperwork, including opening a bank account, getting done to write my surname correctly, and applying for a check redemption.

I was informed about check redemption prices, which are something as follows:

  • 0.8% or a minimum of $35.00

Which I believe is a pretty fair amount!

And I was told that I will receive that money in my bank account in 14 days.

Overall - I'm pretty happy with my "new" bank, and hope that everything will go smoothly right now (I'm still waiting for money to be transferred to my new bank account at Bank Republic)

I hope a precedent will be set, and those few Amazon Associates here in Georgia, looking for ways to get their checks cashed will learn that the Bank Republic might be their choice.

Drupal 8 Configuration for Nginx Server Blocks, Ubuntu 14.04

| Drupal Development | 13 seen

After a long period of doubts should I start testing and developing with Drupal 8, which stable version is not yet released, yesterday I decided to give a try for a Drupal 8 beta release.

I bought a new Linode VPS, quickly deployed there Ubuntu 14.04, and installed Nginx as a web server. I did it because my current server is PHP 5.2, and Drupal 8 is asking for at least PHP 5.3. So  - not to mess up with my existing server configuration, a new Linode seemed the best option.

All went pretty smoothly, I had some problems configuring Nginx virtual server blocks, but after a couple of hours of investigation all went right (I forget to do the server restart a few times, to apply new changes).

Anyway, when the virtual server was configured, and DNS pointed, I quickly installed Drupal 8 on one of the sub-domains (I'm looking to do a Drupal 7 upgrade to Drupal 8, for my existing blog - the one you are reading right now)

Unfortunately, my Drupal 8 website didn't loaded, because of incorrect Virtual Server block settings (what works for Drupal 7, seems doesn't works for Drupal 8). Luckily I found a working solution on a Drupal website:

Nginx server blocks for Drupal 8

server {

        #listen   [::]:80 default ipv6only=on; ## listen for ipv6

Il tredicesimo apostolo (The Thirteenth Apostle) TV series

| Worth to Watch | 77 seen

A long time has passed since I wrote about the TV series I watch - it could mean just one - I watch them less. Well, that doesn't mean I'm not watching any more TV series at all. I'm!

So - here comes one interesting TV series from Italy - Il tredicesimo apostolo (The Thirteenth Apostle) is an Italian television series produced in 2012. Directed by Alexis Sweet.

In short, the plot revolves around a young priest named Gabriel, who is a professor of theology. In collaboration with the psychologist Claudia, he has been researching the mystical phenomena.

I wouldn't call this a super masterpiece, taking into account that in every tense episode there is thunder and rain behind the window, but in overall, this is pretty the same, something from Dan Brown archives :)

Episode from TV series

Starring: Con Claudio Gioe’, Claudia Pandolfi, Luigi Diberti, Chiara Nicola, Glenn Blackhall, Yorgo Voyagis, Stefano Pesce, Tony Bertorelli e Tommaso Ragno
